Polar Explorer with the comfort of a superyacht is a trend in yacht design that is gaining popularity with every year. Steve Kozloff, a California-based designer, has always had a passion for superyachts, not just yachts, but long-haul and full-displacement expedition yachts. Previously, he has already presented several ideas: among them is the 117-meter long Alexis with a garage for two submarines, and the 113-meter ice-class Caribù sailboat with hangars for three helicopters, and many others.
The new Arctic Owl concept will be part of the Goliath range of expedition yachts. They all have ice-class hulls that can withstand the harshest sea conditions. Arctic Owl is 61 meters long, but not very wide for better fuel economy. In addition to the traditional steel hull with full displacement, it has an aluminum superstructure and a sharp nose that easily handles the ice crust of Arctic waters. The exterior of the vessel is made in a retro-futuristic style. The unusual silhouette combines broken lines and curves, giving the yacht the look of a spaceship from the 60s.
Arctic Owl’s motto is to run away from everyone to the ends of the world! Indeed, the ship will allow you to travel comfortably to the most remote and even lost corners of the globe. Arctic Owl has all the equipment you need for ocean expeditions. There will be a helipad with a hangar for repairs, as well as garages for tenders and the U-Boat Worx Nemo submarine. On the port side there will be beams for lifting and launching expedition equipment and floating craft. The yacht will be powered by two Cummins hybrid diesel-electric engines. The maximum speed will be 18 knots, and the cruising speed – 16. And the main pride: at one refueling the vessel will be able to cover up to 6 thousand nautical miles.
Arctic Owl has not forgotten about the second important component of the concept – superyacht-level comfort. The spacious flybridge will be used for a spa and wellness center, complementing the onboard entertainment with a large indoor pool and a lounge area in the bow of the yacht. Arctic Owl will be able to accommodate ten guests in six cabins, of which two will be represented by master suites with panoramic views. The yacht will be serviced by a crew of six.
Steve Kozloff’s concepts so far only live on paper. However, he believes that such a vessel could be of interest to a person who loves to explore distant corners of the world, rather than having parties on board.
Diving off the coast of Cannes on the French Riviera and visiting a museum is now easy to combine.
This mysterious museum is open to anyone interested in snorkelling, there is no fee, you just need to take the snorkel and dive. A surreal spectacle – huge masked heads with a height of 2 meters, gray faces with closed eyes rise on the seabed near the island of Saint-Marguerite. And this is not the ruins of an ancient civilization, but the first art installation in the Mediterranean.
Four years ago, the Mayor of Cannes decided to clear the debris (old boat engines, pipes and plastic) from the abandoned coastal part of the island by ordering a project for an unusual underwater park.
So, at a depth of three meters off the coast of France, the stunning underwater Cannes Museum of Sunken Sculptures appeared. It is worth adding that the idea of masked sculptures has nothing to do with the global pandemic. Paradox and coincidence.
These unusual monuments were created by the British artist and sculptor Jason de Cayres Taylor, known for his underwater works. The Masks of the Cannes Underwater Museum is a look into the past of the island of Saint-Marguerite, which will always be associated with the history of the mysterious prisoner – the Man in the Iron Mask – the hero of legends, novels and popular films.
The sculptures in masks are, as it were, divided into two parts, representing the duality of the ocean – on the one hand, strong and indestructible, on the other hand, fragile, suffering from human negligence. The faces of the sculptures are casts of real faces of local residents. They were chosen at random. Taylor placed an ad in the newspaper and invited everyone to plunge into the world of art. Now at the bottom of the ocean there are monuments of a local curator, a small businessman, an obstinate schoolboy, an old fisherman.
The sculptures, made from PH-neutral materials and special marine cement, were brought to Cannes by boat and installed with cranes.
Six large heads, each weighing at least 10 tons and the clean coastal area should attract not only diving enthusiasts. The sculptures were installed in open areas of white sand, trying not to harm the seaweed of Posidonia oceanic. Due to the large amount of oxygen released by the algae, it is called the “lungs of the sea”.
To update the ecosystem of the Cote d’Azur, Oceanic Posidonia was not chosen by chance. Growing for hundreds of kilometers in dense meadows, this seaweed creates a valuable environment for marine life. Posidonia is also an ocean orderly – it “collects” plastic that gets stuck in dense vegetation. Spherical fibers are thrown ashore during storms. In one year, Posidonium balls can catch up to 900 million microparticles of plastic.
This is not Jason Taylor’s first underwater art project. The ocean floor is unstable and underwater figures support ocean ecosystems. Taylor’s sculptures are artificial reefs that attract corals and provide a haven for marine life in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. From Grenada to Australia and Mexico, the artist has created over 1,000 underwater sculptures. Taylor opened the world’s first underwater sculpture park back in 2006 in the Caribbean.
The Cannes Underwater Museum is a great example of how important it is not only to seek out amazing ocean landscapes, but also to improve and create the underwater world ourselves. Or, at least, not to harm this strong, and at the same time, fragile organism, whose name is Ocean. “I think many people mistakenly believe that the most beautiful and fragile part of our oceans is coral reefs,” Taylor says. The main environmental problems are selfishness, greed and apathy, and in order to cope with them, we need cultural and spiritual transformation. But these are just fragile structures. Underwater museums are a drop in the ocean, but this is also the beginning.”
Yachting in the Mediterranean is like yachting through the beautiful scene of a postcard. You’ll have to continuously remind yourself that this is real life and that you’re actually swimming in this crystal clear water and are actually moored right next to the most beautiful beach on the most beautiful island you’ve ever seen. And you’ll understand why a yachting holiday in the Mediterranean is the best travelling experience you’ll ever have.
Croatia’s Islands
Croatia, the land of 1,000 islands, is an absolute paradise for yachting holidays. Yachting the Croatian coast is a truly unique experience, which includes typical Venetian villages with ancient baths, bell towers, medieval fortresses, quaint taverns and some of the clearest waters and pristine beaches in the Mediterranean. Although the islands stretch from Istria to Dubrovnik, most are clustered in central and southern Dalmatia. Dropping anchor in one (or ten) of these spectacular islands during your yachting trip around Croatia is definitely a highlight of the coastline. You’ll discover secluded coves inaccessible from land, bathe at sunset in spectacular waterfalls and savour delicious local food and wine in the taverns of some of the most beautiful hidden islands.
There are more than one thousand Croatian islands in the Adriatic Sea, all varying in size; from small, tree-covered rocks to some of the larger islands in the Mediterranean. yYachting Croatia’s islands offers everything from stunning national parks, to incredible beaches and 24-hour party pontoons, and each island has its own unique highlight and attractions.
The Greek Islands
The Greek Islands were made to travel on yachts. Greece is known as the Mediterranean home for yachting holidays, and has long been a favourite of travellers and yacht enthusiasts from all over the world. For those who want to explore its beautiful beaches, coves and the many timeless ancient archaeological sites this country has to offer, the Greek Islands are full of picturesque destinations to visit during your yachting holiday. Imagine cruising past classic whitewashed houses in greek style with cobalt-blue doors and rows of red geranium-covered terraces, all overlooking the aquamarine rainbow of the sea below.
There are so many versatile islands—each with their own unique personality, but all sitting conveniently close to each other—that every stop in a new port feels different and fresh. The five main island regions for a yachting holiday in Greece include the Ionian Islands, the Cyclades Islands, the Saronic Islands and Argolic Gulf, the Sporades Islands and the Dodecanese Islands. The Ionian, Cyclades and Saronic, however, are the most popular.
The coastline of the French Riviera
Taking France’s yacht route to the Côte d’Azur is an excellent way to experience some of the world’s dreamiest beaches;. It is an iconic French landscape with numerous national parks and famous destinations like Antibes, Cannes, Monaco, Nice, and St-Tropez. Throughout the whole year, these chic hubs where parties never stop attract elite visitors.
While these resorts might be teeming with tourists who want to have at least a glimpse of celebs, a nice yacht tour to Île de Porquerolles can reveal another side of the French Riviera. Île de Porquerolles is the biggest Hyéres Island where the air is filled with the delicate scent of eucalyptus and pine. With unspoiled natural beauty and jaw-dropping scenery, the island can capture the hearts of the most jaded travelers. It is the best place for those who are longing for a reprieve from yachting along the lively coastline of the French Riviera. Sea excursions to other islands are also rewarding for both mind and body. No doubt, the Côte d’Azur has numerous yachting venues that can satisfy all tastes.

The iconic car brand returns to the Formula 1 starting grid. The new Aston Martin AMR21 was unveiled on Wednesday in the traditional color for manufacturers and teams – British racing green. The car will make its track debut during the shakedown at Silverstone on Thursday.
The presentation was attended by American football legend Tom Brady and actor Daniel Craig, who plays James Bond.
When Aston Martin first announced plans for 2021, cynics were quick to suggest that this was nothing more than a publicity stunt. But everything is much more complicated. After unsuccessful competitions in 1959 and 1960, Aston Martin had a limited presence in Formula 1, but only as a sponsor and later title partner of Red Bull.
The 2021 Aston Martin team is not built from scratch. This is the rather famous Racing Point from Silverstone, which has previously competed in both Force India and Jordan GP.
It all began in 2018, when the Montreal billionaire with Ukrainian roots Lawrence Stroll bought out the external control of the Formula 1 Force India team. The businessman’s investment helped the team, she changed her name to Racing Poin and continued to participate in the competition. Less than a year later, the Canadian acquired a significant stake in the Aston Martin Lagonda and announced his return to Formula 1. As part of this deal, Racing Point was renamed Aston Martin.
The team has a new roster of drivers for this season: Lance Stroll (son of Lawrence Stroll) has been joined by four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel. At the end of 2020, after six seasons in the Maranello team, becoming the third most productive driver in terms of victories, Vettel left Ferrari.
The Aston Martin AMR21 car differs not only from its predecessor Racing Point RP20, but also from its ancestor Mercedes W10.
Aston Martin has redesigned the rear suspension of the 2020 Mercedes as well as optimized the chassis shape. The rear suspension concept, with the wishbone attachment point on the shockproof structure, provides better traction.
Changes have also been made to the design of the front of the monocoque, this should improve the cooling system of the power plant. In order to provide maximum airflow to the radiators, it was necessary to move down the cone-shaped energy absorbing elements. They were located inside the pontoon and are part of the monocoque. These transformations are related to the chassis rework, so the team had to spend both development tokens under the terms of Formula 1.
Aston Martin moved the upper anti-shock structure down. The car received a redesigned front fender, new side panels and radiator air intakes. Aerodynamics have worked on the deflectors and the underbody. It has become two-tiered and three-layer.
Lawrence Stroll has more than once declared his desire to turn Aston Martin into a “British Ferrari”, and at the presentation of the team, he announced that the fight for championship titles in Formula 1 is not far off.
Aston Martin chief executive Otmar Safnauer was more restrained when talking about what he expects from the 2021 Formula 1 season:
“It’s easier to say that we will fight for the title than to actually do it. For this to happen, two things have to happen. First we need to come up with a good plan and then execute it. In three to five years, Aston Martin will fight for the championship title.”
The fourth place last year was the team’s best result in three years. And since this season is unlikely to be an immediate threat to Mercedes and Red Bull, reaching third place by the end of 2021 appears to be. We are growing as a team. As you grow, of course, the dynamics change and they need to be managed, but the team’s DNA hasn’t changed. We’re still the bunch of riders we’ve always been. ”
In the 2021 Formula 1 season, the format of the racing weekend with a short “sprint” race (which is supposed to be held on Saturday, and its results will be determined by the formation at the starting field of Sunday arrival) should be changed at the three Grand Prix.
According to Sebastian Vettel, this idea is meaningless. “Why hold a pre-final, and then the final itself? What’s the point? I don’t understand this. It is clear that if the races are still held on Saturdays, then I will participate in them – after all, I want to then take part in the Sunday race. But from my point of view, it makes no sense. You have a Grand Prix – you need to drive about 300 km per race, the Grand Prix itself becomes the main event of the weekend ”
Let us recall that the Formula 1 teams have approved a number of changes to the regulations that were developed to deal with the crisis in the context of the coronavirus pandemic. The concept of a “budget ceiling” was introduced. In 2021, each team’s budget will not have to exceed $ 145 million. In 2022, the ceiling will be lowered to 140 million, and in 2023 – to 135 million.
And the last thing. Participation in Formula 1 for Aston Martin is another attempt or a chance to save the business from bankruptcy. Against the backdrop of the crisis, Stroll has to develop, or rather maintain the brand, but how this will affect sales is not clear.
Marketing events in 22 countries and an audience of 2 billion people is what Lawrence Stroll is concerned about. Let’s wish him good luck.
Fulfilling dreams and wishes, designers continue innovating to create more luxurious, comfortable and impressive pools on superyachts’ board. But is this all-”inclusive jigsaw” puzzle so easy to put together if you decide to include the refreshing feature on your boat trip? Let’s figure it out.
If you want to have fun by the pool, why not to do it on your own yacht? No sharks, rays, dangerous jellyfish – there is such an opportunity, and on luxury yachts it is always included in the kit. And if ten years ago, yacht pools were limited by engineering capabilities, today they are limited only by the imagination of the owner or designer.
Pools, waterfalls and aquariums: the richness of luxury yachts
The yacht pool is basically a place to relax, chat with friends and guests, admire the ocean or the beautiful island lagoon around.
But just nowadays you won’t surprise anyone with swimming pools. Therefore, a lot of people now want waterfalls, water cascades and whole attractions. These are all additional challenges for engineers and designers.
For example, the Dutch superyacht manufacturer Oceanco almost always prefers to install a variety of water features and attractions for its exclusive clients – these range from a simple jacuzzi to a pool with a waterfall and even a pool with a built-in aquarium.
Back in 2007, Oceanco were among the first to install an infinity pool that reached the aft deck of the 82-meter Alfa Nero. This allowed yacht owners and guests to feel connected to the ocean while on holiday. But the “highlight” was the engineering development, which allowed, if necessary, to raise the base of the pool to floor level, turning it into an entertainment area, or even into a helipad.
Another nautical attraction is the CRN yacht ‘Latona’, which will surely surprise even the most sophisticated amateurs. The reason for this is the spectacular garage pool! The built bowl is used as a kind of tender harbor, where you can moor with guests and comfortably climb aboard the ‘Latona’. And when the weather makes it difficult to enjoy outdoor activities, the tender leaves the garage. Not only does this innovation look very sophisticated thanks to the turquoise mosaic walls, but from a technical point of view, this solution significantly saves space.
But the largest swimming pool in the world with a length of 25 meters is on the 156-meter yacht Dilbar. It is twice the pool size on Flying Fox, also a Lürssen yacht that many consider to be the ultimate superyacht. The pool at Dilbar is semi-Olympic, and engineers had to work hard to design a structure that can hold 180 cubic meters of water. It was not so easy to “trick” the laws of physics to keep all this five stars proudly afloat.
Fly in a barrel of rum: the laws of physics on guard
Pools, waterfalls, fountains, aquariums and jacuzzis on yachts – it sounds and looks great. But if you delve into the technical features, then the process of installing any water object on a yacht is much more complicated than it seems at first glance, and is fraught with many problems.
Since the yacht is designed to move on water, the ability to easily juggle the laws of physics is lost here. The movement of the boat itself creates wave impulses in the pools on board. And they are difficult to contain, even in the most calm cruising conditions.
To address this age-old problem aboard the 80-meter Golden Odyssey, engineer Martin Francis developed and pioneered a wave impulse suppression system. It is based on an interlocking anti-roll system consisting of interconnected water reservoirs used to stabilize waves. Water flows from one reservoir to another, controlled in such a way as to extinguish the resulting heel. The wave is “caught” at the edge of the pool in the collecting tank and “released” back into the pool, dampening the yacht’s movement.
Your own designer
One cubic meter of water weighs a ton and significantly affects the overall stability of the structure. This indicator should be considered during the planning phase of any significant water body on the board of yacht. To prevent the pool from shifting the center of gravity of the boat, it is usually placed on the lower deck next to the stern. But you always need to take into account the shape of the body and not every project has the opportunity to make the depth of the pool the way you want. And if you are not the owner of the 156-meter yacht Dilbar, then you will hardly be able to feel like a swimmer on Olympic distances – the size of the pool directly depends on the length and level of the yacht’s draft.
Pools with a counterflow, with hydromassage, combining a pool and a jacuzzi at the same time – all of this is now available for installation on yachts. A typical solution is to create an infinity pool with a float function.
But if you have an idea to make not only a pool, but also to decorate it with a fountain for showiness, you should think about this. It is not enough just to pump water through a nozzle and rely solely on pressure. It is necessary to take into account the movement of the yacht, which means the strength of the wind. For example, Fluidity Design has introduced a range of jets that are more resistant to ship movement and wind, which can be switched on and off, lifting water vertically into the air and arcing through the pool. The jets built into the bridge above the pool allowed for a rain effect. Nevertheless, even with such devices, it was necessary to resort to additional tricks – to reduce the wave impact and lateral wind force.
Plus, there is always a question of energy consumption. The more “bells and whistles” at the pool, the more expensive. A modest fountain with a dozen vertical nozzles that emit water jets two meters high will require about four times the capacity of an unheated pool measuring 6 by 4.5 meters.
In 1994, engineer Jonathan Quinn Barnett created a 7-meter waterfall aboard a 73-meter vessel. He had to use plexiglass screens and angled the waterfall to minimize splashing. Then the water entered the drainage basin and returned to the top thanks to the circulation pump. The higher the body of water, the more options for the movement of the water droplets. In this regard, it is worth thinking not only about splashes, but also about minimizing the rumble that such a technology will create on a yacht.
In addition to cascading mechanisms, fountains and artificial rivers, you can install quite classic pools of various types on yachts: slider pool, inflatable or glass pools.
An inflatable or floating pool is suitable for small yachts and even cruisers. This is a good budget option that can be installed and deployed in a matter of minutes.
But, for example, a slider pool adorns the Atreides Yacht. The mechanism is designed in such a way that the structure is hidden in the hull of the boat itself. And when needed, at the touch of a button, the pool appears in the water behind the yacht, and visually becomes a harmonious continuation of the vessel. The water is sea water, but bathers are safe from marine life.
The pool made of high-strength acrylic, or the so-called glass pool, is usually installed on luxury yachts. It can be either collapsible or built-in. Considering the transparency of acrylic 98%, and at the same time its incredible strength, it is possible to make the pool transparent from all sides, including its bottom. And if you initially plan this structure when building a yacht, then a luxurious option would be to make the bottom of the pool – the ceiling of the sleeping cabin.
The main principle of modern yacht interiors is that function must support aesthetics, that is why most designers are almost always want to include water features that cause a wow effect. But the installation of any water body on a yacht requires an integrated approach. Well, and … friendly relations with the laws of physics.
A new masterpiece, the Nautilus Stone, the result of the latest collaboration between Thomas Mercer and Winch Design, has won the Bespoke Cabinetry Award at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards!
Andrew Winch, founder and creative director of Winch Design said: “This second iteration of the Nautilus fills me with joy. It is not only testament to the integrity of Thomas Mercer’s vision and skill but it also exemplifies the ethos that good design is versatile and adaptive”.
As a reminder, the first version of Nautilus was made for superyachts from indigo bohemian crystal, a trademark of the world famous company Crystal Caviar.
The Nautilus is a horological sculpture fusing interior design and astronomical timekeeping. The word Nautilus derives from the Latin form of the original Ancient Greek: ναυτίλος (nautilos) which means sailor, a title fitting for this unique sculptural time piece, inspired by the ocean.
Andrew Winch and the design teams at Winch Design drew inspiration from the spiral of the Nautilus shell, owing to its elegant form which follows the golden ratio of the Fibonacci spiral. Quarter-circle arcs are inscribed with the Fibonacci integers (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13 and 21), and the curvature of the crystal spirals out from the intricate clock face inside. Nature in its purest form is reflected in the proportions of this exquisite time piece.
The streamlined yet physically imposing piece is the signature work of world-renowned Marmor Hotavlje. The mechanism of the Nautilus belongs to the exclusive family of astronomical movements, featuring a perpetual calendar which displays date of the month, month, leap year. It also indicates the equation of time, and other celestial coordinates such as the magnificent 3-D moon with moon age indicator.
Nautilus is a masterpiece based on the unique expertise of Winch Design.
Embodying their ethos of beauty, uniqueness and perfect proportion, the Nautilus transcends the boundaries of clockmaking, elevating itself to the class of horological sculpture.

Innovative design combined with innovative aesthetics and modern technology are always the winning factors. They, as a rule, lead not only to popularity and clients and commercial success, but also to the enthusiastic assessment of experts in the field of yachting. On January 19, Pershing won the prestigious 2021 Motor Boat Awards, where a group of experts praised the boats for their innovation, technical parameters and style. At the virtual award ceremony, Pershing 8X won the Custom Yachts category, which also took the results of running tests.
Pershing 8X is the result of a collaboration between Fulvio De Simoni and the engineering division of the Ferretti Group. The yacht is 25.55 meters long and 5.86 meters wide. Built of lightweight carbon fiber, it provides fuel economy. Pershing 8X has sleek and sporty lines, as well as the brand features of the shipyard: impressive side wings and aerodynamic profile.
Pershing 8X is not just an innovation among the brand’s new boats, it is a breakthrough in the industry of all pleasure yachts. And the reason for this is a case called Music Hull. In short, this technology allows you to enjoy music underwater during scuba diving or riding the waves on a jet ski.
Another technical development that Pershing is especially proud of is the new generation of propulsion drive from TopSystem. The unified control interface of Xenta Systems and Naviop-Simrad LOOP makes it easy to maneuver, navigate or monitor. Simply put, the Ferretti Group has been able to develop solutions that take on the complex functions of the interaction of engines and other onboard systems, and to anyone who climbs the captain’s bridge, the control of the boat seems intuitive and simple.
With this important award, Pershing reaffirms that it is a unique brand that is admired all over the world, thanks to its innovative design and technology.
